Villa Herdin’s History

The Herdin family is a significant part of Falun's history, dating back almost exactly 300 years. In 1721, the Herdin family started a textile dyeing business by the Falu River. Locals would bring their clothes here to be dyed. An artifact from that time is the preserved washing bridge still moored in the river in central Falun.

The family patriarch in Falun, Carl Herdin, was a goldsmith, but it was as dyers that the Herdin family played an important role in the city's economy for several hundred years. The dyeing business grew over time, and in the early 1900s, the development of today's company began. Herdin's first product was launched in 1912 and was called Härvans home dye.

Oskar Herdin (1857-1939) was a bank director, city council member, and parliamentarian. In 1897, he and his wife Olga built a "summer cottage," which is now Villa Herdin at Sjösidan. Their circle of friends included notable figures like Carl and Karin Larsson and Anders Zorn.
